Are you missing getting spray tans as much as I am? Here are some tips on how to achieve a flawless self tan application.
1. Remove hair and exfoliate
You want to create the smoothest canvas possible, which is why it's very important to exfoliate.
It is a good to be silky smooth and hair-free right before you tan. However this step is optional.
We recommend exfoliating and hair removal BEFORE you’re shower so that you wash off any residual products.
2. Make sure your skin is clean
Even just a hint of deodorant, perfume or lotion can cause disaster as they can cause your tan to turn green.
If you simply can’t resist, you could always spray a little bit of perfume in your hair.
3. Moisturise dry areas just before application
Dry areas must be moisturised pre-tan.
Focus on the following areas: elbows, knees, knuckles, between the fingers, inner wrists, ankles and toes.
A tan primer is best, as it acts as a barrier to stop the tan from catching and looking scaly.
4. Use a tanning mitt
A mitt protects the tan from absorbing into your hands and helps evenly distribute the product. The best way to use your mitt is squeeze or pump the fake tan onto your palm then fold your top fingers down and slap the mitt together, which spreads the product more evenly. Only apply the tan using the top half of the mitt. If you need more product, repeat the process.
5. Apply your tan in front of a mirror
This is definitely a no brainer but if you're tanning solo, stand in front of a mirror to make sure you don't miss any spots. Then when you think you’re done triple check.
6. Don't forget your face
Whether you decide to tan your face or not, you can't forget it altogether.
Make sure that the tan you’re using on your face is actually made to do so (we’re not keen for a breakout are we?) and repeat after me “2 coats on the body, 1 on face”.
If you choose not to tan your face, consider using a foundation or bronzer that matches your tan.
7. Wear loose clothing while it dries
Wearing restrictive clothes, under-wire bras or anything that rubs onto the skin is a big no-no post-tan. The baggier your clothes the better.
8. Do not shave or wash post-tan
It is important to shave pre-tan because if you do it afterwards, you're risking shaving away your tan as the blades tend to pick up any dead skin cells as well as hair.
9. Moisturise
Moisturise one day after your tan, and every morning/night from there on if you wish to maintain your glow and ensure an even fade.
Use a tanning moisturiser/gradual tanner to prolong the life of your tan.
It is so important that you are using good quality products to achieve the best possible results. I HIGHLY recommend Moroccan Tan products. I’ve been using both their professional and self tan ranges for years and it’s by far my favourite tan. It is a violet based tan which means it will (and does) look beautiful on everyone. Application is so easy as the product just glides over your skin and never leaves streaks.
